All my professional life I have wanted to write for a publication that featured other garden writers but without the clutter of advertisements or features of the "trugs you must have" kind. That publication has arrived, and it is called The Garden Collective. Personally, I love James Alexander-Sinclair's remarkably witty and beautifully-crafted pieces, Sandra Lawrence's diving down the rabbit holes of garden history to unearth some fabulous stories, and Matt Pottage's nerdy but eloquent pieces on the plants he gets obsessed about. For myself, I mostly write planty pieces, with a focus on using plants in ecologically-inspired schemes, with what I call the "rabbit's eye" view, on hands and knees to see what is really going on with the species we thought we knew but could know better. And with occasional flights into garden plant history, or more reflective pieces about the point and purpose of why we garden.
