Who wins in a heatwave?
Matthew Pottage knows about the importance of trees and here is his analysis of who is (and who isn't) coping with the extreme heat, the trees that will become a thing of the past, and those who might become familiar in the future.
On the back of three successive heatwaves, I'm feeling somewhat muddled in my emotions about where our summers are going, as a plant lover. I always try not to moan about the warm weather, as we spend so much time with gloom in the UK, and as someone with rubbish circulation, I spend months forgetting what it feels like to feel my toes.
However, the last couple of months have been quite an eye opener. I've written on here before about climate extremes, and even spoken to Kevin Martin, the Head of Trees from Kew Gardens, about his report on what trees will be at risk as the climate continues to change.
A summer like this starts to edit the landscape on our behalf, and even with a determined gardener on the end of a hosepipe, there is only so much you can achieve, or should that be, save. Here are my predictions for the future in trees.
